Selection Process
Recruitment to the SI post involves several stages: Prelims Examination → Mains Examination → Physical Efficiency Test (PET) → Interview
Stage 1: Prelims Examination
Preliminary stage exam for the recruitment to the SI post is the degree-level common prelims exam conducted by Kerala PSC. It is an objective-type OMR based test of 100 questions for 100 marks, conducted for 1 hour 15 minutes, with negative marking for wrong answers.

Stage 2: Mains Examination
The Kerala PSC Sub Inspector (SI) Mains Examination is an objective-type OMR based test of 100 questions for 100 marks, conducted for 1 hour 30 minutes, covering General Knowledge, Current Affairs, Arithmetic & Reasoning, General English, a Regional Language (Malayalam/Tamil/Kannada), and a major Special Topic section having weightage of 45 marks, with negative marking for wrong answers.

Stage 3: Physical Efficiency Test (PET)
Candidates must qualify physical tests like running, long jump, high jump, etc., as per standards.
Stage 4: Interview
During this stage, the board assesses the candidate’s general awareness, understanding of police duties, constitutional basics, communication skills, confidence, discipline, integrity, and attitude towards public service. The interview is usually short, formal, and practical in nature. Common areas of questions includes role and responsibilities of a Sub Inspector, basics of Indian Constitution, current affairs (especially Kerala-related), situational questions (law & order, public complaints, crowd control), personal background, education, and motivation to join police service.

Ministerial and Constabulary: Should not have completed 36 years of age as on 1st January of the year of notification.
Ministerial: From among the Graduate Ministerial staff of Police and Vigilance Department, Fingerprint Experts, Fingerprint Searchers of the Fingerprint Bureau who had completed two years of service in Police/Vigilance Department.
Constabulary: From among the Graduate Police Constables, Head Constables and officers of corresponding rank in Police and Vigilance Department who have successfully completed probation.

Conditions of Service
On selection, the candidates will be under training in the Police Training College for a period of one year. Thereafter they will be on Practical Training for 10 ½ months in the district. The period of training in Police Training College and period of Practical Training in District will not be counted for the purpose of probation, increment and service. On appointment after successful completion of training, the candidates will be on probation for a period of 2 years on duty within a continuous period of 3 years from the date on which they take independent charge of the station. During the period of training in the police training college and practical training in the districts and till successful completion of probationary period the trainee shall be paid such stipend as may be prescribed by the Government from time to time.

After selection, Sub Inspector Trainees undergo professional training at the Kerala Police Academy (KEPA), Ramavarmapuram, Thrissur. Training includes:
